The tear film and why it matters
The tear film is the thin liquid coating over the cornea. Its layers work together to create a smooth optical surface, supply moisture and help defend the eye.
The lipid layer
The outer oily layer slows evaporation. Problems with the eyelids or oil-producing glands can destabilize this layer.
The aqueous layer
The watery middle layer supplies moisture and dissolved nutrients to the corneal surface.
The mucin layer
The inner layer helps tears spread evenly and adhere to the ocular surface. Disruption in any layer can affect the others.
