A practical guide to eye drops for dogs
The right eye-care plan depends on why a dog’s eye is uncomfortable. Lubricating products can support comfort, while infection, injury, glaucoma and other conditions require veterinary care.
Before applying anything
Wash your hands, read the label and check that the container is clean and in date. Do not let the applicator touch the eye, lashes or skin.
Drops or mist
A dropper provides a directed dose. A mist may be easier for an anxious or head-shy dog. The best format is one you can use safely and consistently under veterinary guidance.
Red flags
Seek prompt care for squinting, pawing at the eye, cloudiness, a visible injury, unequal pupils, thick discharge or sudden loss of vision.
